So I was in Ortigas earlier today for a re-recording of a TV Ad I did for an ice cream brand (I’m a part-time voice talent). After the session, I had to head over to Makati for another recording with a different company (the client was a popular fastfood chain) but since the weather was very moody and it already rained a few hours earlier, I decided to hail a cab instead of trek and muscle my way into the MRT.

I got a cab fairly quickly and here’s the short story that I want to share:

A few minutes into the taxi ride along Ortigas, kuya manong (the cab driver) said he needed a quick minute to go pee. He was holding it in for too long na daw (already). We pulled over and he did his deed by a wall with an estero (creek) below. I looked away of course… When he got back in, I said, “Kuya spray-an natin ng alcohol ung kamay mo para hygienic.” (Mister, let’s spray some alcohol on your hands to be hygienic.) And spritz on his hands, I did. He could be handing me sukli sa pamasahe (change for my fare) later on right? It’s better to be safe.

Some quick realizations on this event:

• It’s not easy to be a cab driver, what do you do when you really gotta go?
• I really find the habit of Pinoy males, urinating anywhere, disgusting. Go find a comfort room for goodness’ sake! Do you want our streets to be stinky?
• Good thing, he wasn’t offended by my gesture. A smile really goes a long way!
• ALWAYS bring alcohol or a hand sanitizer wherever you go.

To end the good-natured yet very awkward conversation that followed, I wore my headset and drowned myself into reading a book.
